Stay safe while fundraising
Fundraising for Turn2us is an important way to make a difference for people facing financial insecurity - but your welfare and safety should always be first priority so you are safe and protected. There are a few things it's essential you (and everyone involved) consider or follow to stay safe and legal while you are raising funds.
Turn2us cannot be held liable for accidents, injuries, loss or damages as a result of your event or fundraising.
Fundraising under the age of 18
If you under 18 and planning your own fundraising, you must provide the permission of your parent or guardian in order to fundraise.
Permission
You must have permission from the landowner or local authority if you are planning an event in a public place. Contact fundraising@turn2us.org.uk if you need any support with who you need to seek permission from.
First aid
If you’re planning an event with a large number of people, you will need to make sure you have provisions for first aid. You can get advice from the following organisations:
At smaller events, there should be one first aider available at all times. For events of over 500 people, you will need at least two qualified first aiders available throughout the whole event.
If your event is even bigger than this, please get in touch on fundraising@turn2us.org.uk for more support.
Data protection
It's important that you only collect information from people that you are sure you will need for the smooth functioning of your event. You must keep this information safe (e.g. paperwork is locked away and digital files are password protected).
Do not share any data you collect without gaining consent from the individual concerned. We can advise the best way to do this. You must delete data once you no longer need it.
If you would like to know more about how we handle your data, you can find the Turn2us privacy policy here.
Our team are here to help. If you have any questions about fundraising and the law, please contact us on fundraising@turn2us.org.uk.
Photos
You must let people know if you are planning to take photos at your event. You could do this by informing people as they enter your event, putting up posters or providing information beforehand. It’s best to ask for permission to use photos by creating a consent form. Please contact fundraising@turn2us.org.uk if you need any support.
Insurance
You will need Public Liability Insurance if your event is open to the public. However, it is likely your venue will already be covered by this, so it's important to check with them first. If you are holding the event in your home or on private property, you will need to check your insurance or purchase additional cover.
Fundraising with food
To keep everyone safe, you must check the Food Standards Agency guidelines on preparing, handling, cooking and storing food.
Public collections and lotteries
If you are planning to hold a bucket collection or lottery, contact our team on fundraising@turn2us.org.uk. We will be able to advise you on what is needed to be compliant and also provide you with materials to support your fundraising.
Other fundraising which may require a licence
There are some activities which require a licence if you are doing them in public. For example, playing music or putting up posters or banners in a public place. Please contact your local authority to find out which licences you need for your fundraising.
