How do I avoid an overpayment of benefit?

There are a number of ways you can help to avoid the risk of an overpayment:

Give the right information

Always give accurate information when you make a claim, answer questions from the benefits office, or let them know about any changes in your situation.

Check your letters carefully

Read letters and leaflets carefully. For example, check that your personal details are correct on your benefit award letter, and make sure you understand what changes you're expected to report.

Tell the DWP about any changes in your circumstances

If anything in your life changes, like your income, who you lives with, or your housing situation, tell the relevant benefits office as soon as you can.

Report any unexpected payments

If you get a payment you weren't expecting, or you're paid twice by mistake you should report it straight away.
