Who does it help?

England, Wales and Northern Ireland

You can get a Disabled Facilities Grant to help make improvements to your home. This can include things to make it easier for you to get in and out of, and move around your home. For example, by widening doors, providing ramps or suitable bathroom or kitchen facilities.

Your local authority must give you a Disabled Facilities Grant if you meet the conditions for getting one. You can apply if you are an owner-occupier or a tenant.

If you are a tenant, you have to check that you are the one responsible for doing the work. If your landlord is responsible for doing the work, you will not be able to get a grant but your landlord may be able to apply for a grant instead.

How much will I get?

The amount you get depends on your household income and and if you have savings over £6,000. Disabled children under 18 can get a grant without their parents' incomes being considered.

It will also depend on where you live in the UK, as there is a cap on how much you can apply for:

  • England: Up to £30,000
  • Wales: Up to £36,000
  • Northern Ireland: Up to £25,000

I live in Scotland

You cannot get a Disabled Facilities Grant in Scotland. You should contact your local council and enquire about their 'Scheme of Assistance'.
