Carer’s Allowance and Carer Support Payment
If you get Carer's Allowance or Carer Support Payment for looking after someone, it might stop when you go into hospital. You can usually keep getting it for 12 weeks if you meet the rules and the person you care for is still getting their disability benefit. However, it may stop before 12 weeks if you have had other breaks from caring in the six months before you go into hospital.
If someone gets Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment for looking after you, their benefit will stop after you have been in hospital for 28 days. When you come out of hospital, they will need to reclaim Carer's Allowance or Carer Support Payment.
Claims for Carer’s Allowance and Carer Support Payment can usually be backdated to when you started receiving your disability benefit again
Additional amounts for carers
If someone getting Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment was also getting additional amounts in their other benefits because they are a carer, the additional amount will continue to be paid for eight weeks after Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment stops.
Carer’s Element of Universal Credit
If someone is getting the Carer’s Element in Universal Credit for looking after you, their Carer’s Element will stop after you have been in hospital for 28 days.
