Asylum Seekers - After the asylum decision

Find out more about the rules about benefits if you are an asylum seeker.

After the asylum decision

Asylum seekers who are granted refugee status, or given ‘Humanitarian Protection’ or ‘Discretionary Leave’, are able to claim benefits if they satisfy the usual conditions. See our guide on Refugees.

Asylum seekers who have had their application rejected and are waiting to leave the UK should contact one of the UK Visas and Immigration regional asylum support teams (link opens in a new window) if they need short-term support.

The Refugee Council, a charity that works with asylum seekers and refugees, can advise you further if your application for asylum has been rejected and you are destitute. See the information about their work with asylum seekers on the Refugee Council website ( link opens in a new window)
