Disability benefits

If you weren’t getting any of the benefits listed below when you went into hospital, for example because you only started needing care after you were admitted, you can make a claim while you are in hospital:

If your claim is successful, you will begin to be paid when you come out

Use the Turn2us PIP Helper for an estimate of how much PIP you're likely to get and find personalised tips and support to complete your application.

If you have a terminal illness

If you are terminally ill, there are special rules to help you get PIP, ADP, AA and PADP.

If your doctors say that you are terminally ill and reasonably expected to die within twelve months, you can get the highest rate of PIP daily living component or Attendance Allowance straight away.

It won't be paid while you are in a hospital, but it can be paid if you are in a hospice.

How do I apply?

To apply, contact the PIP helpline and request to start a new ‘special rules for end of life’ claim.

You’ll need to ask your doctor/health professional for an SR1 form and complete the ‘special rules’ section. It should be completed by your doctor or another medical professional and be returned to the Department for Work and Pensions.

Another person, such as your partner, relative or friend, can apply on your behalf without your knowledge under the special rules. However, even if someone else makes the claim for you, the money will be paid to you.

If you are terminally ill and your illness is reasonably expected to cause your death, you can get the highest rate of ADP daily living component or Pension Age Disability Payment straight away.

It won't be paid while you are in a hospital, but it can be paid if you are in a hospice.

How do I apply?

Your doctor/healthcare professional will need to complete a Benefits Assessment Under Special Rules in Scotland (BASRiS) form. If they need support completing the form, they can call the Clinicians’ Helpline on 01382 931060 or visit the Social Security Scotland website.

Another person, such as your partner, relative or friend, can apply on your behalf without your knowledge under the special rules. However, even if someone else makes the claim for you, the money will be paid to you.
