A Pension Age Winter Heating Payment is a one-off, tax-free payment made to households in Scotland with someone over state pension age.

How much Pension Age Winter Heating Payment will I get?

The amount you get will depend on your age and your personal circumstance during the qualifying week of 15 to 21 September 2025.  

If you’re eligible, you should receive a letter in October or November telling you how much you’ll get.  

You can also use the Scottish Government’s eligibility checker to see how much you might get.  

If you receive benefits  

For people getting Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Income-related ESA, Income-based JSA or income Support.  

If you live alone or no one you live with is eligible for a Pension Age Winter Heating Payment, you’ll get:  

  • £203.40 if you we were born between 22 September 1945 and 21 September 1959 
  • £305.10 if you were born before 22 September 1945 

If you live with a partner or someone else who is eligible for a Pension Age Winter Heating Payment and have a joint benefit claim, you’ll get:  

  • £203.40 if both of you were born between 22 September 1945 and 21 September 1959  
  • £305.10 if one or both of you were born before 22 September 1945  

If you don’t receive benefits  

If you live with a partner or someone else who is eligible for a Pension Age Winter Heating Payment and don’t get benefits, you’ll get:  

  • £101.70 if both of you were born between 22 September 1945 and 21 September 1959  
  • £101.70 if you were born between 22 September 1945 and 21 September 1959 and the other person was born before 22 September 1945 
  • £203.40 if you were born before 22 September 1945 but the other person was born between 22 September 1945 and 21 September 1959 
  • £152.55 if you were both born before 22 September 1945  

If you went to live in a care home before 23 June 2025 and are eligible, you’ll get: 

  • £101.70 if you were born between 22 September 1945 and 21 September 1959 
  • £152.55 if you were born before 22 September 1945  

If you went to live in a care home on or after 23 June 2025 and are eligible, the amount you’ll get will be based on your situation before you went into the care home.  

How will I be paid a Pension Age Winter Heating Payment?  

Payments will begin to be made from November 2025 and continue throughout the winter.   

It will be paid directly into the bank or building society account where you are normally paid your State Pension or Social Security Scotland benefits.  

If you haven’t been paid a Pension Age Winter Heating Payment by 31 January 2026, you should contact Social Security Scotland: 

The payment will be labelled as ‘PAWHP’ (Pension Age Winter Heating Payment) on your bank statement.  

Pension Age Winter Heating Payment and other benefits  

A Pension Age Winter Heating Payment does not count as income when working out your entitlement to other benefits.
