Planning and following journeys

A guide on how Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is awarded, the activities you're assessed on and how points are given.

Last reviewed 14 August 2026

Planning and following journeys is a mobility activity. The points you score for this activity are added to your score for the other mobility activity.

Check your likely award

Working out how many points you might get can be difficult. The Turn2us PIP Helper takes you through a questionnaire about the PIP activities and gives you an estimate of the award you might be entitled to, so you don't have to work out the points yourself.

Think about whether you can plan and follow a journey

When considering this activity, think about what help you need most of the time to do it:

  • Safely
  • Well enough (including without experiencing too much pain or exhaustion)
  • Often enough
  • Without taking too long

You get points for the sentence that is true for most of the time, or more than half the time. If more than one sentence is true, you will only get points for the one that is true for the most time.

You can only score one set of points for planning and following journeys - do not add the points together.

No points

You get no points if you can plan how to get somewhere, and find your way there, without any help.

Four points

You get four points if leaving your house makes you so distressed that you can’t do anything, unless someone encourages you.

Examples of so distressed that you can’t do anything:

  • You have an anxiety or panic attack
  • You have a breakdown or meltdown

Eight points

You get eight points if you can’t plan how to get somewhere.

Ten points

You get ten points if you can’t:

  • leave the house because it makes you so distressed that you can’t do anything.
  • travel to a new place without someone else, a guide dog or a special aid to help you.

Examples of special aids:

  • NOT SatNav unless it is especially for disabled people
  • Cane or white stick
  • Braille map

12 points

You get 12 points if you can’t travel to a place you know without someone else, a guide dog or a special aid to help you.
