Review or renew a PIP claim

It is important that you tell the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) if and when anything changes which might affect your entitlement to PIP. For example, if your health gets better or worse, the DWP may review your claim to check you're getting the right amount.

Reviewing your PIP claim

The DWP can review your PIP award at any time, even if it has been awarded for a fixed period.

In most cases, they will begin the review process around one year before your award is due to end.

What happens during a review process?

The DWP will send you a letter with a PIP review form.

You will have 4 weeks to complete the form and return it.

If you need more time, contact the DWP as soon as possible. You'll need to explain why you need an extension.

What if you return the form late?

If you do not return the review form on time, the DWP may stop your PIP payments unless you have a good reason for sending it late.

If your claim is stopped because the DWP does not accept your reason for the delay, you can:

• Make a new PIP claim or
• Challenge the DWP's decision, or
• Do both.

Getting help with the review form

You don’t have to complete the review form on your own.

You can ask someone else to help you, or get support from a benefits adviser by using our Find an Adviser tool.

Will you need another assessment?

If your circumstances have changed, the DWP may need more information before deciding your claim.

This could include asking you to:

• Complete another claim form.
• Attend another medical assessment.

Possible review outcomes

If your PIP award is due to end, it's a good idea to renew your claim early to help avoid a gap in your payments.

You can ask to renew your claim during the last six months of your current award.

As part of the renewal process, you will usually need to:

• Complete a new claim form,
• Attend another medical assessment
