Getting a PIP decision

Once your health assessment has been completed, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will make a decision about your PIP claim.

How the DWP makes its decision

The DWP looks at all the information provided as part of your claim, including:

• Your completed claim form
• Any documents you sent with your claim
• The health professional’s report from your health assessment.

How long does it take?

On average, it takes the DWP 20 weeks from the date you started your claim to make a decision. Some claims are decided more quickly, while others may take longer.

Your decision letter

The DWP will send you a decision letter explaining the outcome of your claim.

The letter will tell you:

• whether your PIP claim has been successful
• which PIP component(s) you've been awarded (daily living, mobility, or both)
• whether you've been awarded the standard or enhanced rate
• how many points you scored in the PIP assessment

Keep your decision letter somewhere safe. You may need it when applying for other benefits or if you want advice about your claim.

Qualifying for PIP

Your PIP award is based on the number of points you score in the PIP assessment for:

• Daily living activities
• Mobility activities

You may qualify for one or both components:

• Daily Living Component
  • 8 to 11 points: Standard rate
  • 12 or more points or if you're terminally ill : Enhanced rate
• Mobility Component
  • 8 to 11 points: Standard rate
  • 12 or more points: Enhanced rate

If you disagree with the decision

If you think the decision is wrong, you have one month from the date you receive your decision letter to challenge it.
