However, for winter 2024/25, these cash payments have been discontinued, and the Energy Price Guarantee is no longer in place. Additionally, the Winter Fuel Payment that was previously available to all pensioner, is now limited to those receiving certain benefits.

In September 2024, the UK Government extend the Household Support Fund until April 2025. The fund is helps households struggling with energy and water bills, food and other essential items.

You do not have to be getting benefits to get help through the Fund.

It’s managed by local councils and authorities in England and the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The type of support you receive may vary depending on where you live. This could include food and fuel vouchers, help with essential items, or small cash payments.

To find out what’s available in your area, contact your local council or authority.

Winter Fuel Payment

The Winter Fuel Payment is a one-off, tax-free payment made during the winter to help with heating costs. In July 2024, changes were announced to the 2024/25 Winter Fuel Payment scheme. Previously it was open to everyone above State Pension age, but now you must have reached State Pension age and be receiving a qualifying during the week of 16th to 22nd September.

This means most people who received the payment last year will not qualify this winter. If you do meet the new eligibility criteria and are receiving Pension Credit or another specified benefit, you will be paid automatically. However, if you didn’t receive a payment last year or if you or your partner are on Universal Credit, you may need to claim.
