Gathering evidence
Start gathering copies of any supporting evidence, such as medical records or letters from people who know about your condition. Write your name and Number used to record your national insurance contributions and tax paid. See full definition on every document you send.
Filling out your PIP form
Complete your form with as much detail as possible about how your condition affects your daily life. If you need more time, you can ask the DWP for an extension. Return your form with your supporting evidence by the deadline.
Sending your PIP form
After you submit your claim, you may be invited to an assessment in person, by phone or by video. The DWP will then send you a decision. If you’re awarded PIP, payments are usually made every four weeks. If you disagree with the decision, you may be able to challenge it.
Use the Turn2us PIP Helper for guidance on completing your form, understanding what evidence to include, preparing for your assessment and knowing your rights throughout the PIP application process.
Report changes
It is important that you tell the DWP if and when anything changes which might affect your entitlement to PIP. If your health is getting worse or better, the DWP may want to reassess you to check you are getting the right amount. You can contact the PIP enquiry line:
- Telephone: 0800 121 4433
- Relay UK: 18001 then 0800 121 4433
- Video Relay Service: British Sign Language (BSL)
Renew your PIP claim
The DWP will contact you in the last year of your PIP claim about review or renewal. Or you can ask to renew yourself in the last 6 months of your claim. You will need to complete another form and go to another medical assessment.
